Investigative Team

Principal Investigator Donald S. Burke, MD, Dean, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh; UPMC Jonas Salk Chair in Global Health; Director, Vaccine Research Center, University of Pittsburgh, will serve as Principal Investigator (PI). Dr. Burke will oversee the conduct of the study, including all aspects of data collection, data management, data analysis and dissemination of study findings. This includes oversight and collaboration with members of all disciplines involved.

Co-Principal Investigator Sam Stebbins, MD, MPH, Director and PI of the University of Pittsburgh Center for Public Health Preparedness, Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, will serve as Co-Investigator. Dr. Stebbins will serve in a senior leadership role to Dr. Burke, providing guidance and recommendations on the overall conduct of the study, and will direct the field epidemiology studies in this project. This includes operational activities, formation and management of sub-committees (e.g. Publications and Presentations committee), and clinical site management.

Co-Investigator Charles Rinaldo, PhD, Chair, GSPH Department of Infectious Disease and Microbiology, Vice Chair, Immunology Laboratory Subcommittee, AACTG ET RAC, NIH, will serve as Co-Investigator. Dr. Rinaldo will serve in a senior leadership role providing guidance on laboratory testing.

Co-Investigator Loren Roth, MD, MPH, Senior Vice President, Quality Care and Chief Medical Officer, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center; Associate Senior Vice Chancellor, Health Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, will serve as Co-Investigator. Dr. Roth will serve in a senior leadership role, providing guidance and recommendations on the overall conduct of the study and on field testing of study participants.

Co-Investigator Michael Wagner, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Intelligent Systems, University of Pittsburgh; Founder and Director, RODS (Real-time Outbreak and Disease Surveillance) Laboratory, will serve as Co-Investigator. Dr. Wagner will serve in a senior leadership role, providing guidance and recommendations on the overall conduct of the study, including development of the enhanced school surveillance and coordination with RODS and NRDM data.

Co-Investigator Stephen Thomas, PhD, Director, Center for Minority Health, Philip Hallen Professor of Community Health and Social Justice will serve as Co-Investigator. Dr. Thomas will serve in a senior leadership role, providing guidance and recommendations on outreach to minority communities, study recruitment, and coordination with the Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Co-Investigator Derek Cummings, PhD, MHS, MS has many years of experience in working with Dr. Burke, and will take the lead on integrating study data into the computational modeling system.

Project Manager Charles J. Vukotich, Jr., MS Senior Project Manager, Adjunct Assistant Professor, University of Pittsburgh Center for Public Health Preparedness, University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, has over 30 years experience in management of public health.
