Center for Public Health Preparedness
The Center for Public Health Practice launched the Center for Public Health Preparedness with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). As one of the national network of Academic Centers for Public Health Preparedness, the center is building the public health workforce and preparedness and response professionals through training, collaboration, and leadership. Pennsylvania Preparedness Leadership Institute
The leadership institute is the flagship program of the Center for Public Health Preparedness. The first and only of its kind in the nation, the institute trains leaders in Pennsylvania's Regional Counter Terrrorism Task Forces.   more...

Pennsylvania & Ohio Public Health Training Center
Entering its fourth year of operation, the Pennsylvania & Ohio Public Health Training Center builds capacity in the public health workforce by offering training in the core competencies of public health. It is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

Teaching

Capstone Course: Roundtable Case Series
The Capstone Course was created by Margaret A. Potter to provide a practice component to the MPH curriculum. Now required for all students, the Capstone Course explores cutting-edge topics in public health. Included in the course is the Roundtable Case Series, three open forums that explore the science; policy, politics, and economics; and the practice aspects of each topic. This spring (2004), the topic is Elderly African American Women: Living with Diabetes. (poster)

Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response Certificate Program
Launched in the fall of 2003, this 15-credit, interdisciplinary program was developed in response to the growing need for public health professionals who are well-versed in emergency preparedness and disaster response. (website        brochure)

Service

Allegheny County Health Department
The center is the link between the Graduate School of Public Health and the county health department. With monthly meetings, the Graduate School of Public Health/Allegheny County Health Department Steering Committee explore avenues of cooperation and resources in order to develop the public health workforce in Allegheny County.

Learning Management System
Center faculty and staff provide evaluation of content for the Pennsylvania Department of Health's Learning Management System (LMS). LMS offers online training programs and information sharing regarding bioterrorism and other public health threats.

Rural Health Preparedness Initiative
The center is working with the Center Rural Health Practice at Pitt-Bradford to develop and implement a series of training programs targeted towards Pennsylvania's rural responders. A key partner in this endeavor is Pennsylvania State University, which has state-of-the-art satellite conferencing capabilities and a network of downlink facilities. more...
